Surgical Specialists in Benign Disorders and Cancer of the Thyroid and Parathyroid

Board-certified otolaryngologists with The Christ Hospital Health Network specialize in both benign disorders and cancer of the thyroid and parathyroid. They use the latest advances in surgical techniques to remove tumors and masses of the thyroid or parathyroid.

Thyroid Surgery

The thyroid is a gland in your lower neck that produces the hormone that regulates metabolism. It is essentially your body's thermostat. Medical conditions or hormonal imbalances are managed by your primary care provider or by an endocrinologist (in complicated cases). But, when you need an evaluation or treatment of masses in the thyroid, or enlarged thyroid goiters, a surgeon would become involved.

Our ENT surgeons evaluate and treat masses in the thyroid or enlarged thyroid goiters. Our specialists will walk with you through your medical history, provide a physical exam and conduct an ultrasound to asses the mass. A biopsy may also be taken to help determine if removal is necessary. Thyroid surgery is sometimes recommended to remove all or part of the gland. A patient without a thyroid gland can live completely normally by taking a thyroid replacement hormone pill once per day. Our surgeons will discuss whether surgery is needed or provide further options for your care.

Parathyroid Surgery

Parathyroid glands regulate calcium in your body. An overactive or a benign tumor enlargement can cause kidney stones, muscle and joint aches, and bone mineral loss. Surgical removal of the benign tumor can cure the problem.

Our ENT surgeons evaluate and treat parathyroid tumors. They will discuss your medical history, provide a physical exam and conduct an ultrasound to evaluate the mass. A biopsy may also be taken to help determine if removal is necessary. Our surgeons will either schedule your surgery or provide further options for your care.
