Established in 1889, The Christ Hospital was born out of the care and concern for the Greater Cincinnati community. In 1888, a group of local citizens led by James Gamble—whose soap business eventually became the Proctor & Gamble company—invited Isabella Thoburn, a teacher, nurse and missionary to come to Cincinnati. They asked her to start a program to train deaconesses to carry on religious, educational and philanthropic work. Thoburn accepted the invitation, and shortly after her arrival she found a sick woman crying on the street because she could not get medical care. Thoburn expanded beyond ministering, and in 1888 opened a 10-bed hospital named Christ’s Hospital in the West End of the city. It was moved to Mt. Auburn in 1893 and was renamed The Christ Hospital in 1904.

In 1969, The Christ Hospital’s first open heart surgery was performed. Since then, The Christ Hospital has been known as a leader in cardiovascular care in the community. In 2004, the hospital completed construction of the $77 million Heart and Vascular Center, adding 123,000 square feet to the hospital for cardiac surgery, testing and research. Then in 2007, it opened the Carl H. & Edyth Lindner Heart Failure Treatment Center for the multidisciplinary care of patients with heart failure. With decades of experience performing complex cardiovascular procedures, our physicians strive to achieve the best patient outcomes, making The Christ Hospital the destination of choice for patients with cardiovascular disease.
