Dedicated to the health of the whole person, including research, early detection, prevention, education and treatment of cancer, The Christ Hospital Cancer Center offers a full range of the most advanced cancer services available. We provide comprehensive outpatient services, a 30-bed dedicated inpatient medical oncology unit and hospice services. We are also proud to be accredited by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS), an agency that evaluates quality and outcome data for cancer centers across the nation.
Advanced technology
A leader in technology, The Christ Hospital Cancer Center utilizes updated linear accelerators with multi-leaf collimation and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) capabilities. This advanced technology targets tumors more precisely with radiation beams while protecting the healthy tissue. In addition, the department is integrated with PET/CT scanning to optimize patient treatment planning. The Center also utilizes a simulator with cone beam CT capabilities. This modern technology confirms accuracy and patient treatment verification.
The Christ Hospital Cancer Center also provides patients access to the latest scientific advances in cancer treatment through participation in state-of–the-art clinical trials. Our research program is consistently recognized by public and private agencies for its high standards in patient eligibility, data quality, and completeness of patient follow-up. We also participate in a nationwide cancer registry database that helps us evaluate patient treatments and improve outcomes.
Compassionate care
In addition to providing the most advanced treatments, our cancer care team strives to ensure that each patient receives the best customer service and the highest quality cancer care. We provide oncology-certified nurses, physicians, radiation therapists, physicists, dosimetrists, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers and chaplains to care for all of your physical, emotional and spiritual needs. For your information needs, The Christ Hospital houses the Sharron Moore Eckel Cancer Resource Center. This unique service offers a variety of information, education and support programs for cancer patients and their families.
Inpatient Oncology Unit 4-West, the inpatient oncology unit at The Christ Hospital is a 30-bed unit. Our multidisciplinary team provides specialized care for persons with cancer, and includes our oncology physicians, nurses, patient care assistants, case managers, pharmacists, social worker, dietitian, and chaplain. Our unit encourages family centered care and supports a holistic approach with our chapel and activity center.
The 4-West staff provides individualized care for persons with cancer, including:
- Providing cancer treatment with chemotherapy and biotherapy drugs,
- managing side effects of the disease or treatment,
- providing patient and family teaching, and
- providing emotional and spiritual support of patients, families, and significant others.
If you or your loved one needs specialized care on an inpatient oncology unit, our 4-West staff is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide this care. Our services are coordinated with outpatient services in The Christ Hospital Cancer Center.
The Sharron Moore Eckel Cancer Resource Center
The Sharron Moore Eckel Cancer Resource Center was established in memory of Sharron Moore Eckel and her brother, Harold Hollaender Moore, who both had cancer and left this legacy. Throughout her life, Sharron Moore Eckel served as a teacher and a guide. She is fondly remembered for her boundless energy and creative spirit. Her legacy continues with the Cancer Resource Center at The Christ Hospital, providing assistance to cancer patients and their families. The Center offers this unique holistic program of information, education and support in a relaxing atmosphere.
CancerHelp™ is an easy-to-use patient education computer database of information on all aspects of living with cancer, including full text of the National Cancer Institute publications. CancerHelp™ is updated monthly to ensure the most current information.
Printed materials such as books, brochures and National Cancer Institute fact sheets on all types of cancer are available. Topics include treatment, pain control, financial and support services, prevention and nutrition.
Tai Chi and Yoga classes
Join us for Tai Chi: A complementary medicine that can benefit your health and enhance your well-being! While Tai Chi may not cure or prevent cancer, there is research to support that many of the techniques reduce stress and some physiologic reactions. The class is taught by Ralph Dehner, certified Tai Chi instructor, Qi Gong, Reiki master and Tai Chi arthritis master/trainer.
Who: Anyone in active cancer treatment, cancer survivors and their loved ones, from master-level to no experience. When: Every Tuesday, from Noon – 1 p.m. Where: The Christ Hospital Cancer Center, D-level Cost: FREE, program funded by the Al Weiherer Foundation and brought to you by The Christ Hospital Cancer Center Registration: At the door. What is Tai Chi exactly and what can it do for me? Tai Chi is a form of slow rhythmical exercise performed with the goal of bringing balance to the internal energy system of the body. Tai Chi has been shown to decrease the pain of arthritis, reduce falls in older adults, improve cardiovascular system function, and reduce high blood pressure, stress, depression and anxiety. It calms the mind and improves posture, strength and balance.
About the instructor: Ralph Dehner is a certified Tai Chi instructor, Qi Gong, Reiki master and Tai Chi arthritis master/trainer. He is also a member of the research team the University of Cincinnati, studying the effects of Tai Chi practice in specific populations. Additionally, he is the program manager of the Mighty Vine Wellness Club, a nonprofit wellness center in Clifton.
Yoga classes

The class will focus on gentle stretching, toning, breathing, centering and relaxation. No need to bring anything! Mats and pillows provided.
The Christ Hospital Cancer Center is a host site for The Wellness Community’s yoga program.
Social Work Services and Resources Available to Patients and Families
Financial Assistance with concerns related to medical coverage, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Disability, Medication Assistance programs, utility payment programs, etc.
Transportation Assistance with neighborhood and community resources, ACCESS, Medicaid (NET), Council on Aging, American Cancer Society, etc.
Home Care Services provided in the home, prescribed or self-pay.
Equipment Assistance with equipment such as hospital bed, wheelchair, cranial prosthesis (wig), oxygen, etc.
Counseling Supportive counseling, grief counseling, and referrals.
Support Groups In the wider community and/or the community in which you live.
