Staying Healthy During Dangerously Cold Weather

Frostbite Can Set In Quickly

Cincinnati (February 18, 2015) – With the freezing temperatures we’re expecting to see across the tri-state, The Christ Hospital Health Network would like to offer some healthy advice to keep area residents safe.

Here are some tips from Don Duke, MD, an emergency medicine physician at The Christ Hospital Urgent Care Center:
  • Dress in layers of loose fitting clothing
  • Keep your feet and hands warm with mittens and socks that fight moisture
  • Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Protect your face and lips against harsh winter winds that chap skin quickly
  • Pack extra warm clothes, blankets, snacks, and water in your vehicle in case you become stranded
  • Teach your children to come inside when they feel cold or if they get wet
  • Eat a light snack, not a heavy meal, before heading outdoors

Remember that the wind chill can pose more hazards than the actual temperature

“If you have to go outdoors in extreme temperatures, it’s important to remember these tips to help you avoid frostbite and hypothermia,” said Dr. Duke.

It’s also important to know the signs of frostbite and hypothermia. Before frostbite sets in, you will experience the feeling of pins and needles or burning. If you have any of these symptoms, go indoors immediately.

Frostbite will appear as white, gray, or yellow patches on your fingertips, nose, cheeks, and ears. You will have numbness in those areas, but you may also feel itching, burning, or pinching pain. Frostbite can be reversed if caught early.

If you have symptoms of frostbite, call The Christ Hospital Urgent Care Center immediately at (513) 564-1366 or visit The Christ Hospital Emergency Department at 2139 Auburn Avenue in Mt. Auburn.
