Local High School Students Attend Live Surgery and Healthcare Exploration

17th Annual Live Surgery Experience Presented by The Christ College of Nursing and Health Sciences

Cincinnati (May 1, 2015) – Hundreds of high school students from across Greater Cincinnati will have a unique opportunity to observe a live surgery at The Christ Hospital, followed by a healthcare exploration at The Christ College of Nursing and Health Sciences on Tuesday, May 5th. The 17th Annual Live Surgery Experience, presented by The Christ College of Nursing and Health Sciences, gives students interested in healthcare careers a chance to see first-hand the varied professionals who work in the operating room, dialogue with a surgeon and an alumni nursing panel, and participate in a simulation activity.
Students from 10 area high schools are scheduled to observe a heart surgery via a video feed to the hospital auditorium. Students from 15 additional schools will also observe on their own campuses via webcast. All students will have an opportunity to interact with operating room personnel through a moderator during the procedure and ask the surgeon, Robert Gallegos, MD questions at the conclusion of the surgery. Following the surgery, college student ambassadors will accompany high schools to The Christ College where they will enjoy lunch and a Q&A with nurse alumni who are willing to share their educational and career paths. An anaphylaxis simulation using SimMan3G will be provided by Mark Johnston, EMS Coordinator, and Maureen Corl, NP, TCHHN Coordinator for Heart and Vascular Programs. The high fidelity human simulator mimics real patients and is used in medical education by nurse educators to promote safe patient care.
The surgery will be broadcast via Black Diamond Video (BDV) Digital Integration Suite, an HD video routing and display solution for operating rooms. Designed to enhance visualization, communication and collaboration inside and outside the surgical environment, the BDV Digital Integrated Suite's powerful streaming technology securely broadcasts video from endoscopes, cameras, and other connected sources live in HD to remote destinations. Often used for instant consultation between surgical staff and remote specialists, the HD Digital Integrated Suite's streaming feature is also frequently utilized for teaching applications.
Students are scheduled to arrive at the hospital at 7 a.m. and depart from the college at 1:30 p.m.  The surgery is scheduled to begin in the 8 o’clock hour. Participating schools include:
