When I mention the word spa, you probably think about facials, massages, and mani/pedis, right? Now, when I mention the word Medical Spa, what do you think about? Don't know? How about Botox, Kybella, Dermaplaning, and incredible skin health products? Are you wondering what are all of these things and where to find a Medical Spa? I am so happy to share that The Christ Hospital has its very own Medical Spa. I recently went for a visit to their Liberty office to get Botox and I love the results. Those crow's feet around my eyes are gone. I also look way more awake for my 3:45 a.m. wake-up alarm!
To get the scoop about the services they offer, and how these services can change your life, I spoke with the medical director, Gina Maccarone, MD, who is also a general surgeon.
What is a Medical Spa?
Dr. Maccarone: A medical spa, or MedSpa for short, is a combination of a medical center and a day spa that provides aesthetic medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician.
What services are offered at the Medical Spa?
Dr. Maccarone: We offer skin care and makeup consultations and treatments like Dermaplaning and peels, injectables including Botox, fillers, and Kybella, laser skin treatments, and medical skincare retail sales.
There are several different laser treatment options. What can I treat with these laser options?
Dr. Maccarone: Our laser can treat small areas for laser hair removal, dark spots or hyperpigmentation, spider veins, anti-aging collagen stimulation treatments, and also many other types of non-cancerous skin lesions.
What's the difference between Botox? Juvederm? And Kybella?
Dr. Maccarone: Botox is an injectable wrinkle treatment that softens facial lines. Juvederm is a line of fillers that allow for lip enhancement, restoring facial contours, and improve signs of aging. Kybella is an injectable treatment that can destroy fat cells, particularly along the area under the chin.
The Medical Spa offers Dermaplaning. What it is and how often should I get it done?
Dr. Maccarone: Dermaplaning is a skin treatment that uses an exfoliating blade to remove dead skin cells and hair from the face. This can be performed every 3-4 weeks for best results.
After the layer of fine hair is removed, will it grow back? When it goes back will it be thicker?
Dr. Maccarone: It will not. Contrary to popular belief, dermablade hair removal will not result in either thicker hair growth or darker hair growth. At no point during the treatment will the hair follicles be affected in any way. This is why it isn't scientifically possible for the hair to grow back thicker or darker after the procedure. When the vellus hair does grow back, it will only continue to regrow from the point where it was cut-off. Another huge benefit that dermaplaning offers over other facial hair removal treatments like shaving and waxing, is that there is absolutely zero chance of hyperpigmentation for patients who have darker skin tones.
The Medical Spa is partnered with ZO Skin Health products. What products are offered?
Dr. Maccarone: ZO provides a line of regimens that treat every potential skin type. There are product solutions for facial texture, anti-aging, dryness, sensitivity, acne, and hyperpigmentation. Some of the products are prescription strength, which is why ZO must be carried by a licensed physician.
Do you offer skincare make up?
Dr. Maccarone: We carry Jane Iredale brand which is actually called "the skincare makeup"! For 25 years, the brand has been pioneering clean and safe formulas, and are effective beauty products that are without ingredients that have the potential to cause harm to people, animals, or the environment.
