The Christ Hospital Earns “A” Grade for Patient Safety

The Christ Hospital has been recognized for its dedication to patient safety

The Christ Hospital has been recognized for its dedication to patient safety by being awarded an A grade in the Fall 2017 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from preventable medical errors, injuries and infections within the hospital.

An A grade is one of the most meaningful honors a hospital can achieve, and one of the most valuable indicators for patients looking for a safe place to receive care. The Hospital Safety Score is the gold standard rating for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and administered by The Leapfrog Group, a national, independent nonprofit. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Hospital Safety Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.

“For over 125 years, The Christ Hospital has been a leader in transforming care across the region by providing exceptional care. Our continued recognition by The Leapfrog Group for our dedication to patient safety reflects the commitment of our talented physicians, nurses and employees to provide our patients and their families with the best outcomes and the finest experiences,” said Mike Keating, President and CEO of The Christ Hospital Health Network.

Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.

The Christ Hospital Health Network has participated in the multi-hospital Target Zero safety initiative since 2011 to elevate safety behaviors and practices. This initiative includes a daily safety call with leaders across the organization to create a forum where potential issues are risks are discussed to raise awareness and work toward resolution. Since the daily safety calls were implemented, The Christ Hospital already outstanding safety performance has continually improved.

Investments in electronic medical records, computerized physician order entry and remote, electronic monitoring of all intensive care unit beds have also helped to advance safety at The Christ Hospital. Safety is also promoted through hourly rounding by bedside staff and rounding by hospital administrators to ensure patients and their families are satisfied with their care.
