The Christ Hospital Health Network named Top 50 in the Nation for Cardiovascular Hospitals

Fortune/IBM Watson study shows The Christ Hospital sets the bar for other heart programs nationally.

The Christ Hospital Health Network was included in the 2021 Fortune/IBM Watson Health “50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals” list, naming the top-performing U.S. hospitals for inpatient cardiovascular services. The study identifies hospitals that delivered better outcomes while operating more efficiently and at a lower cost.

According to Fortune/IMB Watson Health, publicly available data was used to evaluate 980 hospitals based on several key performance indicators, including; clinical outcomes, average lengths of stay in the hospital, operational efficiency and patient experience. Hospitals were also each individually ranked on outcome measures for key areas of cardiac treatment, including; acute myocardial infraction, heart failure, coronary artery bypass graft and percutaneous coronary intervention.

The Christ Hospital ranked 8th in the category of “Top teaching hospitals with a cardiovascular residency program,” and achieved the following ranks in each area of cardiac treatment:

• Acute myocardial infraction rank: 16th

• Heat failure rank: 7th

• Coronary artery bypass graft rank: 9th

• Percutaneous coronary intervention rank: 8th

• Total number of years on 50 Top list: 14

Compared to similar cardiovascular hospitals, this year's 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals winners had better results on indicators intended to measure clinical outcomes, clinical processes, operational efficiency and financial performance. These measures evaluate inpatient and 30-day mortality, patient complications, 30-day readmission, average length of stay, 30-day episode-of-care payment and adjusted cost per case, for acute myocardial infarction (AMI), coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and heart failure (HF) patients.

“The care here in heart and vascular has been driven by clinical research. Clinical research drives quality and excellence in patient care at The Christ Hospital through innovation and technology,” said Dean Kereiakes, MD., Medical Director of The Christ Hospital Heart and Vascular Center. “We create patient care programs based on specific disease entities like heart failure, women’s heart health and complex coronary intervention. We design these programs with a credible physician champion and enable them with infrastructure support, meaning a clinical coordinator/navigator and a dedicated advanced practice provider who is diseased focused. Each of those miniature Centers for Excellence are then matrixed with the Lindner Research Center at The Christ Hospital for access to leading-edge technologies."

"We are honored to be named one of the nation's 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals, and are proud to continue The Christ Hospital's long tradition of clinical excellence," said Eugene S. Chung, M.D., Chief of Cardiology and Heart & Vascular Service Line Director. “As ‘Greater Cincinnati’s Heart Hospital℠,’ this honor is well-deserved by our exceptional team of physicians, nurses and staff who provide the most advanced and experienced cardiovascular care in the region.”

"Heart disease still remains the leading cause of death for all Americans and has a disproportionate impact on communities of color, rural populations and other underserved groups. In this light, cardiovascular care with an emphasis on health equity is essential," said Kyu Rhee, Chief Health Officer, IBM Watson Health. "The exceptional organizations on the Fortune/IBM Watson Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals list are setting the standard for high quality, efficient, patient-centric care for heart disease. We believe that these top institutions are leading the effort to enhance and evolve the way we treat and prevent this disease."

All research was based on the following public data sets: Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data, and Hospital Compare data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website. Hospitals do not apply for awards, and winners do not pay to market this honor.
