Christ Hospital Health Network Surgeon Uses New FDA-Approved Shoulder Implant

New Implant is the First in the Country to be Used

CINCINNATI (MARCH 22, 2022) – This week, a Christ Hospital Health Network surgeon was the first in the country to implant a new FDA-approved shoulder implant. The brand-new shoulder implant baseplate, manufactured by DePuy Synthes and part of their reverse shoulder replacement platform system, was designed in collaboration with physicians, including Paul Favorito, MD, an orthopedic shoulder surgeon and Division Chief of the Shoulder and Upper Extremity Service at The Christ Hospital Health Network.

Reverse total shoulder replacement surgery has been FDA approved since 2004 and has revolutionized aspects of shoulder care. This implant has wide applications for the treatment of arthritis, rotator cuff tears and fractures. A key portion of the system is the newly designed baseplate that attaches directly to the scapula or shoulder socket. The new component will result in better fixation and should improve longevity or lifespan. The end result should be improvement on already exceptional outcomes for the patient.

“This new product enhances stability and provides a solution for bone loss in patients that struggle with everyday tasks like combing their hair or even reaching for items on a shelf,” said Paul Favorito, MD, a co-designer of the implant. “Performing a shoulder replacement is like building a home. It’s important to have a flat and secure foundation for the house. This component creates a solid platform that will ultimately allow restoration of shoulder motion and strength.”

Dr. Favorito says offering this specific implant at The Christ Hospital Health Network means patients will not have to travel far for the newest medical technology. Having his team perform these surgeries at The Christ Hospital, where the most shoulder procedures in Southwest Ohio are performed means faster recoveries too.

“I always want to offer my patients the best care. That means access to the latest technology so that they will have the best outcomes and a better quality of life. I’m confident that this new implant will provide that. I’m thrilled to have designed a product with DePuy Synthes that will help thousands of patients around the world who have shoulder pain and dysfunction.”
