Removing Tonsils and Adenoids in Children and Adults in Greater Cincinnati

The Christ Hospital Health Network’s board-certified otolaryngologists provide children and adults with the safest surgical techniques for tonsil and adenoid removal, also called a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy

The tonsils and adenoids are located in the back of the mouth where the pharynx joins the oral cavity. The tonsils are paired structures that are located on the left and right side and can be seen when looking into the mouth, while the adenoids are located up behind the nose.

If frequent infections occur, or infections persist in spite of treatment, surgical removal may be recommended. While removing the tonsils and adenoids is less common than it was in years past, this surgical procedure is still performed routinely across the United States.

The reasons for tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy include chronic or recurrent infections, enlargement causing obstruction of breathing while sleeping, abscess formation around the tonsil, or less often, cancer.

This procedure is most often performed in children and adolescents but is also performed in adults of any age if the need arises. The procedure requires a general anesthesia and must be done in an operating room at the hospital or surgical center. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis but sometimes requires an overnight stay in the hospital because of age, medical conditions or a history of nighttime obstruction sleep apnea.
