CINCINNATI (September 9, 2025) – The Christ Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute is proud to announce Juan B. Umana, MD, has joined the network. Dr. Umana is a world-renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and has started to see patients.
Dr. Umana earned his medical degree from Universidad de Los Andes in Bogota, Colombia where he also minored in biomedical engineering. He completed his residency and his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic where he received the Seal Family Fellow Award and the Clinical Excellence Award.
"I am incredibly excited to join The Christ Hospital Health Network and contribute to its legacy of excellence in cardiovascular care and innovation," said Dr. Umana. "I’m also fortunate to be working with one of my mentors, Dr. J. Michael Smith, who has been instrumental in leading the way in cardiac surgery. Heart surgery requires a relationship built on trust, and I look forward to building that with the community of Greater Cincinnati.”
Dr. Umana was inspired at a young age to pursue a career in medicine watching his father’s volunteer work during medical mission trips. He hopes to continue his legacy of helping others as he strives to offer his patients the best technical expertise and clinical outcomes, with a focus on accompanying each patient as an individual with unique needs through their disease process. He is board eligible with the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and he is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
