Diagnosing a Meniscus Tear

You may be able to walk or continue to play sports with a torn meniscus, but proper diagnosis and treatment are essential for healing. We can help.

Signs & Symptoms

• The meniscus often makes a popping sound when it tears. Other symptoms may include
• Inability to straighten the leg
• Knee catching or locking
• Knee “giving out”
• Limited range of motion in the knee
• Pain on the side or center of the knee
• Swelling of the knee joint

Diagnosis

In addition to a physical exam to check for swelling and tenderness, we may use the following imaging tests to diagnose a torn meniscus:

• Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)—to create detailed pictures of your knee.
• X-rays—of the knee.

Meniscus Tear Treatment

Treatment for a torn meniscus depends on your age, overall health history, and the severity of your injury. We will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan, which will likely start with resting the joint, stopping the movement or activity that causes pain, and the R-I-C-E (rest, ice, compression, elevation) method.

If you need more care, treatment options may include:

• Activity modification to limit movement
• Bracing devices to support and protect the knee
• Crutches or a wheelchair
• Exercises to strengthen the knee joint
• Pain medication
• Physical therapy to restore function and mobility

If nonsurgical treatments don’t work, we may recommend an arthroscopy. This is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to repair or remove damaged tissue.
