Diagnosing a Meniscus Tear
You may be able to walk or continue to play sports with a torn meniscus, but proper diagnosis and treatment are essential for healing. We can help.
Signs & Symptoms
- The meniscus often makes a popping sound when it tears. Other symptoms may include
- Inability to straighten the leg
- Knee catching or locking
- Knee “giving out”
- Limited range of motion in the knee
- Pain on the side or center of the knee
- Swelling of the knee joint
Diagnosis
In addition to a physical exam to check for swelling and tenderness, we may use the following imaging tests to diagnose a torn meniscus:
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)—to create detailed pictures of your knee.
- X-rays—of the knee.
