Choose the Right Care for Your Needs
When an illness or injury can't wait, The Christ Hospital Health Network offers both Urgent Care and Emergency Care services to help you get the treatment you need.
Urgent Care
Urgent Care is a convenient option for minor illnesses and injuries that need prompt attention but aren't life-threatening. Our board-certified physicians and advanced practice providers treat patients ages 18 months and older at locations in Fort Wright, Green Township and Madisonville (Red Bank).
Emergency Care
For serious injuries, severe symptoms and life-threatening emergencies, our emergency departments are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our emergency medicine specialists and hospital-based teams are equipped to provide advanced care when every minute matters.
Not sure where to go? Use the guide below to compare symptoms and conditions commonly treated in Urgent Care and the Emergency Department.
Should You Go to the ER or Urgent Care?
The type and severity of your symptoms can help determine where to seek care.
When to Go to the ER
Visit the emergency department for serious illnesses and injuries that could threaten your life, health or long-term recovery. Emergency departments offer advanced services that are only available in a hospital, including surgery, intensive care and specialized emergency treatment.
When to Go to Urgent Care
Urgent Care is best for minor illnesses and injuries that need prompt attention but are not medical emergencies. Think of it as an extension of your primary care provider when your doctor's office is closed or an appointment isn't available.
When to Call 911
Call 911 instead of driving yourself to the emergency department if you have:
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing
- Heavy or uncontrolled bleeding
- A seizure
- Sudden vision changes
- Symptoms that make you feel faint or unable to safely travel
Emergency medical services can begin treatment on the way to the hospital and help ensure you receive care as quickly as possible.
If you have health insurance, urgent-care visits typically have lower co-pays and out-of-pocket expenses than ER visits. Our urgent care centers accept many commercial insurances and offer multiple payment options, like cash, check, debit, credit, and medical savings plans.
