Inpatient hospice centers provide short-term and crisis care for patients who are unstable or whose symptoms cannot be controlled in the place where they live. The new unit will allow emergency and hospitalized patients to transition easily and quickly to specialized hospice care without having to be transported to an offsite hospice location. Patients can also be admitted from their homes and other locations in the community.
Hospice of Cincinnati’s current inpatient centers are in Blue Ash, Anderson Township, Hamilton and College Hill.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to offer experienced, hospital-based hospice care to patients who are too fragile or unstable to be transferred to another location,” said Gayle Mattson, President and CEO of Hospice of Cincinnati/HOC Navigators. “The unit at The Christ Hospital is an extension of our mission to provide the best possible and most meaningful end-of-life care to our community.”
“We are honored to be working in partnership with the team at Hospice of Cincinnati to offer these very important and meaningful services on-site at our main hospital campus to ease the burden on families and patients during a very sensitive and stressful time,” said Debbie Hayes, President and CEO of The Christ Hospital Health Network. “Improving the health of our community is our mission in all stages of a patient’s journey through life. A partnership with Hospice of Cincinnati enhances our capabilities to bring that mission full circle.”
The hospice unit at The Christ Hospital’s main campus will include a chapel and a gathering space for families that to provide comfort, support and privacy. Hospice of Cincinnati/HOC Navigators team members will staff the unit. Aman Ahmed, M.D., of Hospice of Cincinnati will be the supporting physician.
Hospice is a patient-centered, family-focused approach to end-of-life care for people with a life expectancy of six months or less if their illness follows its natural course. It is designed for patients who have decided to no longer pursue a cure for their illness, and instead seek comfort, symptom management and quality of life.
