On January 2, 2023, the world watched as swift action was taken with CPR and AEDs during Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest in Cincinnati. Following that event, The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office shared a critical need with the Rotary Club of Cincinnati, to equip all cruisers in their patrol fleet with an AED. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and the Rotary Club of Cincinnati then partnered with Project Heart ReStart, which has a simple goal; to prevent unnecessary cardiac deaths.
The kickoff event challenged business leaders to help raise much needed awareness and funds for these lifesaving devices. Debbie Hayes, President & CEO of The Christ Hospital Health Network announced a $25,000 donation and Hamilton County announced an additional $125,000.
From May 2022 through May of 2023, there were over 1,200 cardiac event calls to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s patrolled areas, and more than two thirds of those patrol cars did not have an AED in their cruiser. Hamilton County Sheriff deputies are often the first responder to those calls. Only 30 Hamilton County Sheriff cruisers have an AED leaving 100 without these life-saving pieces of medical equipment. Every minute of delay in the use of an AED reduces the survival rate by 7-10%.
Having an AED for our first responders on the scene of a cardiac event increases the survival rate from 10% to 40%. Our mission is to equip all sheriff’s patrol cars with an AED, provide CPR and AED training for the deputies, and beyond.
