The certification recognizes The Christ Hospital’s efforts to provide patient and family-centered care and to optimize the quality of life for patients with serious illnesses. Palliative care addresses a patient’s physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs while facilitating patient autonomy, access to information and choice.
“We are honored, once again, to receive the highest certification for palliative care,” said Julie Holt, VP and Chief Nursing Officer at The Christ Hospital Health Network. “Patient safety and quality of care lead our mission at The Christ Hospital Health Network. Our team of skilled health care professionals have everything it takes to create a culture of treatment where our patients are the heart of what they do every day.”
The Christ Hospital underwent a rigorous onsite review. During the visit, a Joint Commission reviewer evaluated compliance with related certification standards. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewer also conducted onsite observations and interviews.
“Palliative Care Certification recognizes health care organizations commitment to striving for excellence and fostering continuous improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Ken Grubbs, DNP, MBA, RN, executive vice president of Accreditation and Certification Operations and chief nursing officer, The Joint Commission. “We commend The Christ Hospital for using The Joint Commission certification process to reduce variation in clinical processes and to strengthen its clinical program to drive safer, higher quality and more compassionate care for individuals served.”
In 2015, The Christ Hospital became the first palliative care program in the Cincinnati Tri-State area to achieve The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Palliative Care Certification. Since that time, the program has been successfully recertified four more times in a row, each with no corrective findings. At the latest visit, the reviewer identified three “best practices” which stand out as national exemplars for improving patient safety and quality of care.
The Christ Hospital also holds Gold Seal of Approval certificates in advanced total knee and total hip replacement, inpatient diabetes care, advanced heart failure, primary stroke center and ventricular assist device.
