The Christ Hospital Earns “A” Grade for Patient Safety

The Christ Hospital has been recognized for its dedication to patient safety by being awarded an “A” grade in the Fall 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades

The Christ Hospital has been recognized for its dedication to patient safety by being awarded an “A” grade in the Fall 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from preventable medical errors, injuries and infections within the hospital.

An A grade is one of the most meaningful honors a hospital can achieve, and one of the most valuable indicators for patients looking for a safe place to receive care. The Hospital Safety Score is the gold standard rating for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and administered by The Leapfrog Group, a national, independent nonprofit. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Hospital Safety Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.

“Awards like Leapfrog’s ‘A’ grade reflect our commitment to our patients’ safety. Every employee, from clinical to environmental services staff, share this responsibility, and work together to provide the best experience for every individual who seeks care in our network,” said Arturo Polizzi, President and CEO of The Christ Hospital Health Network. “I’m proud of this recognition, and proud of our staff who work tirelessly to keep our patients’ safety a top priority.”

Using 28 evidence-based measures of patient safety, The Leapfrog Group calculated a numerical score for all eligible hospitals in the U.S. (For a list of exclusion criteria, download a copy of the scoring methodology at www.HospitalSafetyGrade.org). The numerical score was then converted into one of five letter grades. "A" represents the best Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, followed in order by "B," "C," "D," and "F."
Researchers assessed more than 2,600 hospitals receiving Hospital Safety Grades and found that when compared to “A” hospitals:

• Patients at “D” and “F” hospitals face a 92% greater risk of avoidable death
• Patients at “C” hospitals on average face an 88% greater risk of avoidable death
• Patients at “B” hospitals on average face a 35% greater risk of avoidable death

Of more than 2,600 hospitals graded, 33% earned an “A,” 25% earned a “B,” 34% earned a “C,” 8% a “D” and just under 1% an “F”
