Studies show that both pregnant and postpartum women have experienced substantially elevated anxiety and depression symptoms compared to pre-COVID-19 levels. Thirty-seven percent reported clinically relevant symptoms of depression, while 57% reported clinically relevant symptoms of anxiety. Higher symptoms of depression and anxiety were associated with concerns over threats of COVID-19 to the life of the mother. Other concerns include not getting necessary prenatal care, relationship strain, and social isolation due to COVID-19.1

This program aims to help women better identify signs and symptoms of depression, distinguish between what may be considered common “baby blues” with more serious forms of depression, and provide tools and resources to help them care for their mental health. To do this, female therapists from Galia will be providing 45-minute, one-on-one, virtual consultations, scheduled at the patient’s convenience. The goal is to break down barriers that may keep women from addressing mental health concerns, such as lack of information, not wanting to leave home, or not having childcare. Research indicates that treatment for postpartum mental health concerns is very effective once started.

“Women are often putting their families before themselves, so it’s important for them to understand how recognizing and treating mental health needs is a benefit for themselves and their families,” says Leanne Olshavsky, MD, Medical Director of Women’s Health at The Christ Hospital. “There is significant research on the long-term effects of postpartum depression on not only women, but their children. Studies show connections in delays in child development and an increase prevalence of childhood depression.”

Galia Collaborative is the region’s leader in women’s mental health and has been drawing attention to the mental health crisis faced by mothers during the pandemic. “Postpartum mental health has always been a major concern, but the circumstances of the past year have brought the challenges even more to the forefront,” says Ashley Solomon, PsyD, clinical psychologist and founder of Galia Collaborative. “We are facing an inflection point in the mental health of women. If we can support mothers at one of the most vulnerable times in their lives, we will create stronger and healthier communities.”

Complimentary consultations are only available to women delivering with The Christ Hospital Physicians. Additional services provided by the Galia Collaborative are available to all at normal pricing. For more information, please visit TheChristHospital.com/Galia.
