The Christ Hospital Maintains Highest Rating for Quality by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid

The Christ Hospital is the only hospital in the Cincinnati Region to achieve a five-star rating from CMS in 2021.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) updated its Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings on its Hospital Compare website for 2021. The update sees The Christ Hospital maintain its five-star rating, which is the highest rating given. The Christ Hospital is also the only hospital in the Cincinnati Region to receive five stars in 2021.

CMS’ star rating system, which launched in 2016, assigns stars based on 48 measures in the following five categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care. This differs from CMS’ previous method, which includes 65 measures across seven groups. CMS rated more than 4,500 hospitals with the following breakdown: one star: 204 hospitals, two stars: 690, three stars: 1,018, four stars: 988, five stars: 455.

“The CMS Star Rating system is a valuable tool for patients that provides helpful and important information on the safety and quality of hospitals,” said Debbie Hayes, Interim President and CEO of The Christ Hospital Health Network. “We are delighted to have, once again, achieved the highest rating offered by CMS. I would like to acknowledge and thank every single team member in our organization for their continued commitment to our patients. Their passionate commitment to excellence and working with shared determination to achieve these results on behalf of the communities that we serve is the reason that we are able to continue to fulfill our mission of improving the health of this community.”

The Star Ratings drive systematic improvements in care and safety as hospitals strive to achieve and maintain high ratings. In order to harness competition to lower costs and improve quality, patients need meaningful, actionable information. Consumers and patients point to Hospital Compare and the Star Ratings as important resources and rely on the latest data. Many hospitals rely on these ratings to identify areas for improvement.
