The Christ Hospital Health Network is honoring its commitment to providing the best heart care in Greater Cincinnati with the addition of world-renowned cardiac surgeon J. Michael Smith, MD, a pioneer in the development of Robotic cardiac surgery.
Dr. Smith joins our Network after an illustrious career as a cardiac surgeon at Good Samaritan Hospital and, more recently, in the TriHealth healthcare system. Dr. Smith serves as Network Medical Director of the Cardiovascular and Mitral Valve Surgery Program and Medical Director of Cardiovascular Surgical Research for The Carl and Edyth Lindner Research Center at The Christ Hospital Health Network. Dr. Smith will also hold the Castellini Foundation Endowed Chair in Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Christ Hospital Health Network.
“It’s an honor to have the opportunity to join this well-respected, world-class heart team, and I am excited to start collaborating and providing the best care to this community, “said Dr. Smith. “My mission to improve the lives of others, through ongoing research and great patient care, completely aligns with that of the heart program and The Christ Hospital Health Network, and I am excited to do great things together.”
“This is a great opportunity for J. Michael Smith, The Christ Hospital, and most of all, for the Cincinnati community. This “marriage” provides a tremendous resource to the region. J. Michael Smith is a gifted surgical talent, a scholar and a gentleman,” said Dean Kereiakes, M.D., Medical Director of The Christ Hospital Heart and Vascular Center and The Christ Hospital Research Institute.
“Dr. Smith has worked with most of our physicians over the past 20 years and has the ringing endorsement of every single one,” said Dr. Chung, Medical Director of the Heart and Vascular Program. “Similarly, his relationships with patients is beyond reproach. He is a consummate professional and team player, builder of programs, and together we plan to further elevate cardiovascular care in the region.”
Dr. Smith graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati and his cardiothoracic surgery residency at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
Dr. Smith’s scope of service includes robotic-assisted cardiac surgery, coronary bypass surgery, valve repair or replacement, and the MAZE procedure for atrial fibrillation. Dr. Smith has authored numerous scientific publications in peer-reviewed medical journals, and he has lectured on advances in robotic cardiovascular surgery at national as well as international medical conferences. Dr. Smith received the Cincinnati Business Courier Health Care Heroes Award for Innovation and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Good Samaritan Hospital in 2011, and he has been recognized as a “Top Doctor” by Cincinnati Magazine for the last 19 years.
