A cancer diagnosis can be very difficult to digest. You may have trouble understanding your prognosis, treatment options, or the available resources.
That's why a social worker is part of your cancer care team, and can help you and your family with many aspects of your cancer care:
- Cope with your diagnosis and emotions.
- Get support for you, your family, and caregivers, including referrals to community resources.
- Make decisions about treatment options, work, and family.
- Find help for your home, including medical equipment and referrals for home care.
- Understand employer medical leave and disability assistance.
- Review and understand Social Security benefits.
- Know how and when to enroll for Medicare benefits.
- Access medications.
- Get transportation and lodging, including the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge.
- Give legal assistance about your medical wishes.
- Understand when and how to use palliative care.
