Trigger Finger

Trigger finger is a type of tenosynovitis, which is closely linked to tendonitis. Trigger finger happens when the lining of the tendon sheath becomes inflamed and thickens, which makes it difficult to bend and straighten your finger or thumb, causing it to lock or “trigger.”

Diagnosing Trigger Finger

The cause of trigger finger is not well understood. However, people who experience forceful hand activities or have diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis are at higher risk for this condition. 

Signs & Symptoms

Trigger finger symptoms may include:

• Difficulty flexing your fingers and/or thumbs
• Inability/difficulty extending your fingers and/or thumbs 
• Involuntary locking of your fingers or thumb
• Pain in your fingers and/or thumbs

Diagnosis

To diagnose trigger finger, your doctor will review your symptoms, discuss your health history and any current or previous injuries, as well as examine your finger for stiffness and signs of locking. In some cases, your doctor may order an X-ray.

Trigger Finger Treatments

Nonsurgical Treatments

We can typically treat trigger finger with nonsurgical treatments. The most common treatment options for trigger finger include:

• Anti-inflammatory medication (NSAIDs)—to treat pain and inflammation.
• Cortisone injections—to minimize pain and swelling.
• Physical therapy—exercises to strengthen muscles and regain range of motion in your finger or thumb.
• Splinting—keeps the affected finger or thumb in a straight position.

Surgical Treatments

If your trigger finger or thumb does not improve with nonsurgical treatment, your doctor may recommend a surgical trigger finger release procedure.
