Sue Butler Women’s Cardiovascular Fellowship

Our one-year, non-ACGME accredited fellowship provides advanced and specialized training in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease in women. Program objectives include: 

• To provide focused clinical training in the comprehensive cardiovascular care of women across their lifespan. 
• To provide clinical and translational research skills in sex-specific cardiovascular disease. 
• To develop and train leaders to advance the cardiovascular health of women through evidence-based care, research, education, and advocacy. 

Applicants must have obtained a medical degree and completed an internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, or family medicine residency prior to commencement of this fellowship. Completion of a general cardiology fellowship is not a prerequisite. One fellowship position is available each academic year.

We are based at our hospital in Mt. Auburn, just three miles from the heart of downtown Cincinnati. Experience & Responsibilities 

We offer important clinical research experience training in the comprehensive clinical care of women across their lifespan through specialized clinical programs including: 

• Intrapartum and Postpartum Heart Health Program 
• Preventative Women’s Heart Health Program 
• Cardio-Metabolic Program 
• Coronary Microvascular and Vasomotor Dysfunction (CMVD) Program. 

Training includes a major emphasis on CMVD given our program is one of the fastest growing in the country. Training in the assessment of coronary microvascular dysfunction using both invasive and non-invasive modalities will be provided. Additionally, you will have exposure to cardiovascular diseases more common in women including MINOCA, SCAD, Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, HFpEF, and post-partum cardiomyopathy. 

We will also provide focused training in clinical research related to sex and gender differences in cardiovascular health and disease. Fellows will have diverse clinical research experience in collaboration with the Lindner Center of Research. 

Each week you can expect to spend two days in the specialized women’s heart center clinics, one day learning coronary functional angiography testing in the catheterization laboratory or training in non-invasive imaging modalities, and two days a week conducting clinical research.

Application & Requirements

The following requirements must be met to be considered for the Sue Butler Fellowship in Women’s Cardiovascular Health: 

• Completion of a three-year ACGME-accredited residency program by the time of entry into the fellowship 
• Board-certified or board-eligible by the American Board of Internal Medicine 
• Completion and passing of all three United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners steps (Canadian medical school graduates are exempt if they have passed similar exams in Canada) 
• Valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate for all foreign medical graduates 
• J-1, J-2, or O-1 visa for non-U.S. citizens 
• Ohio and Kentucky state medical license (if accepted into the program)

Applications will be accepted from September 1, 2025 – February 17, 2026. Interviews will be conducted in late February/early March. One fellow will be selected for the program that will start in July of 2026.
