The Da Vinci 5 robot, developed by Intuitive, has uses for a number of cardiovascular and oncology surgeries. This is the first documented case of a surgeon using the device to perform an aortic valve replacement. The surgery does not last as long and what used to take a week to recover with other forms of aortic valve replacement, patients can go home in three days post-surgery.
“This type of aortic valve replacement has the opportunity to revolutionize how heart surgeons perform aortic valve replacement,” said J. Michael Smith, cardiovascular surgeon at The Christ Hospital Health Network. “There’s not a need to do open chest surgery with this procedure and patients will be able to recover faster. While this is still a new use for the Da Vinic 5 robot, we believe this could be the standard for aortic valve replacement surgery in the future.”
The Christ Hospital Health Network currently offers more cardiothoracic robotic surgery options than any other health system in the region. For more information on robotic surgery featured at The Christ Hospital Health Network, click here.
