Let’s Talk: Can CBD Oil Help Menopause Symptoms?

While the verdict is still out on whether CBD oil can help with the symptoms of menopause, it may be worth giving it a try. Dealing with hot flashes, insomnia and other not-so-glamorous things can certainly take a toll, so let’s talk about CBD oil and other natural remedies for relief while you’re going through the dreaded ‘change’.

What is CBD exactly?

CBD is a chemical in cannabis (marijuana). The chemical is extracted from cannabis plants and used to treat several health conditions, including epilepsy, insomnia and anxiety. Unlike its more well-known counterpart THC, CBD is not psychoactive, so it can’t “get you high”.

Can CBD oil help menopause symptoms?

While there’s solid evidence that CBD oil can reduce seizures in people with epilepsy, there’s simply not enough data to say for sure if it’s effective at treating other health problems, like menopause symptoms.

Is CBD oil safe?

Preliminary data shows that CBD oil itself is relatively safe. But before you try it, note first that data is lacking, and more research needs to be done.

Doctors are waiting to see more safety data before they encourage its use for menopause symptom relief. If additional studies continue to confirm CBD oil’s safety, then it should be OK to try as a treatment for menopause.

What other natural remedies can help during menopause?
While we wait for the final verdict on CBD oil’s safety, consider other natural remedies for menopause:

  • Doctors say the first natural remedy to try is lifestyle modification. Exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables and lean proteins will improve your menopause symptoms and overall health.
  • Other natural remedies that may help include soy and black cohosh. The evidence on whether or not these are effective treatments is mixed, but most studies say they aren’t harmful to try.

In the State of Ohio, CBD oil is legal only from a dispensary licensed by the state (not from drug stores or gas stations). In Kentucky, CBD oil is legal so long as it is derived from industrial hemp. Have more questions about CBD oil or menopause? Our women's health experts can help answer questions you may have. Schedule an appointment online  at a location near you!
