The Christ Hospital Health Network Welcomes Rod Flynn, MD

Surgical Oncology Specialist Brings New Treatment to The Christ Hospital

Cincinnati (July 14, 2017) – The Christ Hospital Health Network is proud to welcome Rod Flynn, MD. Dr. Flynn is a surgical oncologist and brings extensive experience and a new treatment focus to The Christ Hospital Health Network-Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), a highly concentrated, heated chemotherapy treatment that is delivered directly to the abdomen during surgery. Unlike systemic chemotherapy delivery, which circulates through the body, HIPEC delivers chemotherapy directly to cancer cells in the abdomen. Advantages of HIPEC include: allows for high doses of chemotherapy, enhances and concentrates chemotherapy within the abdomen, minimizes the rest of the body’s exposure to the chemotherapy, improves chemotherapy absorption and susceptibility of cancer cells and reduces some chemotherapy side effects. HIPEC gives patients with specific types of advanced cancer hope who were otherwise resigned to hospice.

In addition to HIPEC, Dr. Flynn specializes in treatment of advanced peritoneal malignancies and cytoreduction (debulking) as well as treatment of the following types of cancer: liver, bile ducts, pancreas (including the Whipple procedure), small and large intestine, thyroid and adrenal glands, melanoma and other skin cancers, soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities and retroperitoneum, laparoscopic surgery/laproscopic staging of intraabdominal malignancies. Dr. Flynn understands the importance of treating not only the tumor but also the mind, body and spirit of the patient.

Dr. Flynn is looking forward to giving back to the place he was born, The Christ Hospital. Dr. Flynn is married to his best friend, Betlehem (Betty) and they have two young daughters, Grace and Micah. They are heavily involved in church life and fellowship and strongly believe that “how we live our lives and treat others should be a reflection of our love for God and His love for us.”

Dr. Flynn earned his medical degree at University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Graduate Hospital. He completed a surgical oncology fellowship at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He worked at hospitals in Maryland and Virginia and most recently built and led the HIPEC program at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Philadelphia.

Dr. Flynn is located at The Christ Hospital Cancer Center and Montgomery and can be reached at 513-585-0694.
