The Christ Hospital Adds World Renowned, Locally Loved Cardiac Surgeon, J. Michael Smith, MD to Region’s Premier Heart Program

The Christ Hospital Health Network is honoring its commitment to providing the best heart care in Greater Cincinnati with the addition of world-renowned cardiac surgeon J. Michael Smith, MD, a pioneer in the development of Robotic cardiac surgery.

Dr. Smith joins The Christ Hospital Health Network after an illustrious career as a cardiac surgeon at Good Samaritan Hospital and, more recently, in the TriHealth healthcare system. Beginning January 2020, Dr. Smith will serve as Network Medical Director of the Cardiovascular and Mitral Valve Surgery Program and Medical Director of Cardiovascular Surgical Research for The Carl and Edyth Lindner Research Center at The Christ Hospital Health Network. Dr Smith will also hold the Castellini Foundation Endowed Chair in Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Christ Hospital Health Network.

He is a consummate professional and team player, builder of programs and together we plan to further elevate cardiovascular care in the region.”

Dr. Smith graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati and his cardiothoracic surgery residency at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Smith’s scope of service includes robotic-assisted cardiac surgery, coronary bypass surgery, valve repair or replacement and the MAZE procedure for atrial fibrillation. Dr. Smith has authored numerous scientific publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and he has lectured on advances in robotic cardiovascular surgery at national as well as international medical conferences. Dr. Smith received the Cincinnati Business Courier Health Care Heroes Award for Innovation and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Good Samaritan Hospital in 2011 and he has been recognized as a “Top Doctor” by Cincinnati Magazine for the last 19 years.
