The Christ Hospital Health Network is pleased to announce the offering of “Today’s Grandparent Class,” a virtual newborn care and safety classes for grandparents designed to keep attendees safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Christ Hospital finds that grandparents are among the biggest influencers of their grandbabies and how they’re cared for. Educating grandparents and making sure they have access to the most up-to-date information is as critical as educating parents when it comes to topics such as safe sleep habits and breastfeeding. Virtual classes allow grandparents access to this information, along with all the benefits of in-person classes, while also keeping them safe.

These virtual classes differ from many online resources as they are taught by an instructor in real time on Zoom. This allows participants to interact with one another and ask questions. Classes are one hour each and are hosted every month. Topics include baby safety and care, newborn feeding, holding, diapering, dressing, car seat information, postpartum depression, SIDS, safe sleep, and more. Zoom capabilities mean participants can split up into smaller groups for discussion and community building, exactly like what happens in in-person classes.

“We are thrilled to offer the brand-new grandparent education class at The Christ Hospital,” says Leanne Olshavsky, MD, Co-Medical Director of Women’s Health at The Christ Hospital Health Network. “We’re constantly exploring innovative ways to help support our patients and their families throughout their pregnancy. Grandparents often play a critical role in the care of a baby, but we realize there are challenges and risks to in-person meetings during a pandemic. Because of that, we specifically structured this class to emulate many of the benefits of in-person classes while eliminating those risks. We love the special bond between grandparents and babies because it provides a sense of security and support for the child and brings out the youthfulness in grandparents.”

Because responses to this class have been so positive, The Christ Hospital will continue to offer virtual classes for grandparents even after the pandemic.

To register for an upcoming class, please go to the Eventbrite website, or call 513-585-2155 for more information.
