CINCINNATI (April 8, 2026) – The Christ Hospital Health Network expanded its heart surgery capabilities by becoming the first in Ohio to perform a physician-modified aortic arch aneurysm repair procedure. The surgery was performed by Geoffrey Answini, MD, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Christ Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute.
The procedure involves a bypass followed by the surgeon’s placement of a modified thoracic endograft, that is altered on the back table to fit the patient’s arch anatomy and then reconstrained in the delivery system for minimally invasive deployment. The hybrid approach helps maintain blood flow from the aorta to critical vessels supplying the brain and upper extremities and is designed to treat complex aortic arch aneurysms measuring more than 5.5 centimeters. This procedure can be done through the groin and doesn’t require open heart surgery, which is the way most centers treat this medical condition.
“The case required coordination across a multidisciplinary team and reflects advanced endovascular expertise,” said Dr. Answini. “This type of procedure is performed at a limited number of centers nationwide and highlights The Christ Hospital’s continued growth in complex aortic work and commitment to bringing innovative, less invasive treatment options to the region.”
By avoiding a more invasive approach, surgeons are able to perform a more targeted repair and offer patients a quicker recovery, while maintaining a high level of precision in some of the most complex heart surgeries.
