Orthopedic surgeon with extensive training in sports medicine and conditions of the shoulder
Dr. Allison Rao is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine and shoulder surgery with an emphasis on innovative, arthroscopic procedures and complex, open surgeries of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. She treats a full spectrum of orthopedic injuries in patients and athletes of all ages, with a special interest in shoulder injuries and surgery. She is actively involved in clinical research and is an expert in nonsurgical management and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries such as tennis elbow, meniscus tears and ACL injuries. Her care philosophy is to utilize evidence-based, individualized treatment plans to get her patients back to the activities they enjoy, and to prevent further injuries.
Education and training
Dr. Rao completed her Sports Medicine, Shoulder, and Elbow Fellowship at top-ranked OrthoCarolina, where she had extensive hands-on experience in sports medicine and shoulder surgery, treating recreational, high school, collegiate, and professional athletes. She has team coverage experience with Carolina Panthers Football, University of North Carolina Charlotte Football, University of North Carolina Charlotte Basketball, Davidson College Football, Gardner-Webb University Football, Charlotte Knights Triple-A Baseball, Chicago Joffrey Ballet, and Roosevelt College Basketball, as well as local high school teams.
In addition to her fellowship training, Dr. Rao received her undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with honors. She earned her medical degree from the Stanford University School of Medicine and completed the top 5 ranked orthopedic surgery residency at Rush University in Chicago, IL.

Dr. Rao is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Ruth Jackson Orthopedic Society for women in orthopedic surgery. More about Dr. Rao
Dr. Rao was born and raised in Madison, WI, but relocated to her husband’s home state of Ohio to continue her orthopedic practice at The Christ Hospital Health Network in Cincinnati. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, running, tennis, traveling, cooking, hiking, and participates in all varieties of fitness classes.
