CINCINNATI (October 1, 2025) – The Christ Hospital Health Network will open two new Angel Suites for families grieving the loss of a child during pregnancy or shortly after birth. The Angel Suites are funded by The Hayden & Crue Project that works to help families through this difficult period.
The Hayden & Crue Project provides support, healing and compassion to families in their unique journey through parenthood, when experiencing the unimaginable loss of a baby. Their goal is to provide the families with opportunities to privately spend quality time parenting and making family memories with their babies before saying goodbye.
The two suites will be located at the Mt. Auburn Birthing Center in Cincinnati. One of the suites will be located adjacent to the main labor and delivery unit while the second will be placed adjacent to the Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The NICU suite is the first of its kind in Greater Cincinnati. These suites will bring comfort to parents who have lost their baby in the womb or will inevitably lose their baby after giving birth. The space is created outside of the hustle and bustle of the main Labor and Delivery Unit & NICU so families can feel supported away from triggering sounds, equipment and atmosphere that may surround a family in a typical room.
“Working in the labor and delivery unit, we support parents during the happiest and hardest moments of their lives,” said Charla Payne, Nursing Director of Labor & Delivery, at The Christ Hospital Health Network. “By offering these and other services, we can ensure that these families continue to feel the love and support from our entire team at The Christ Hospital. All of our obstetrical and neonatal nursing staff undergo specific training to help families deal with the complex emotions that come from losing a child.”
The suites will include comfortable seating, books, bathing and dressing stations that contain infant clothes and blankets for them to use. These units will also have Caring Cradles that preserve the baby so the family can spend time and create memories before leaving the hospital.
“We are proud to be partnering with The Christ Hospital Health Network by creating two new Angel Suites at the Mt. Auburn Birthing Center,” said Nicole Campbell, co-founder of The Hayden and Crue Project. “Our hope is that these suites and amenities, provided by our two organizations, will help support these families during their most difficult time of grief. By helping them through this process we hope to alleviate that burden.”
Along with the Angel Suites, The Christ Hospital Health Network also facilitates a program called Women in Need of Grief Support (WINGS). The program offers emotional and grief support measures to meet the needs of families who experience perinatal loss at both the Mt. Auburn and Liberty Township birthing centers. The inpatient and outpatient support connects families across Greater Cincinnati that have gone through similar experiences. The WINGS program supports multiple remembrance ceremonies throughout the year, across the greater Cincinnati area, to commemorate these precious families and their babies.
“Our entire labor and delivery team is dedicated to providing the care and attention these families need at a crucial time,” said Elizabeth Moore, DO, at The Christ Hospital Health Network. “Whether it’s the new Angel Suites or the WINGS program, our staff know the sensitivity of these pregnancies. While some parents know what the outcome will be, having a support system to guide them through the grief process in a private setting while celebrating the baby can help them in their time of need.”
The Christ Hospital Health Network also works with Bella Baby, Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep and Sufficient Grace Ministries, to help make many special memories with the families by taking photos of their newborns. Books are given to siblings of the baby to take home and staff perform follow up calls to check in with these parents 2-6 weeks after discharge.
The Angel Suites at Mt. Auburn Birthing Center at The Christ Hospital will be open to use in late October. For more information on other services in the labor and delivery unit, click here.
