Philip D. Leming, MD, is a native of Northern Kentucky. He attended the University of Kentucky as an undergraduate in biology and was awarded the Oswald Undergraduate Research Award for independent research in his sophomore and junior years.

Following UK, he graduated with high honors from the University of Louisville in independent research in cardiovascular surgery and pharmacology. He completed his residency at the University of Cincinnati in internal medicine and a chief residency in medicine. His research areas while at UC involved metabolism, nutrition, leukemia and hypothermia.

Dr. Leming was recruited to the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, where became chief fellow in the clinical pharmacology branch. He was involved in further research in lymphoma as well as testicular and ovarian cancers and received additional training in molecular science, metabolism and venous access research as well as early techniques of laparoscopic surgery and photodynamic therapy. He is one of the founding members of the National Cancer Institutes' information system, PDQ, which is now the main online source for cancer information in the United States.

Dr. Leming is triple board certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology.

In 1983, Dr. Leming returned to the Tristate, specifically Cincinnati, and joined the founder of the medical oncology program at The Christ Hospital, Will Leder, MD, and has continued his involvement in research and clinical care since. He is the medical director and founder of The Christ Hospital cancer research program. He maintains an active practice focused on melanoma, lymphoma and difficult consultative cases in hematology and oncology. He is also teaching faculty member of the internal medicine department and a lecturer in hematology and oncology. And, he maintains a clinical associate professor position at the University of Cincinnati, maintaining active teaching of medical students. He currently leads The Christ Hospital in precision medicine initiatives to bring personalized medicine to the care of patients and further the organization's efforts into genomic medicine.

Dr. Leming is one of the nation's experts in malignant melanoma. He is the founding member of the Society for Melanoma Research and the local founder of Melanoma Know More, the largest regional melanoma family and patient organization. He is integrated nationally and internationally in the research efforts of melanoma and maintains a large research effort to bring new treatments and hope to those with melanoma. He has been involved in all major developments surrounding melanoma in the last 20 years. In fact, much of his early research efforts at The Christ Hospital have become standards of care and he continues to lead in his efforts to find a cure. His philosophy of "curable until proven otherwise" brings hope to those he cares for.

Dr. Leming's hobbies include practicing martial arts (Wo style Tai Chi), spending time with his family and playing piano. Dr. Leming and hematology and oncology partner, Robert Cody, MD, founded the Arches Boogie Piano Stage in 1992. Now a part of the Cincinnati Blues Fest, this event is one of the largest boogie piano events in the nation and is an annual world-recognized event held in Cincinnati.
