CINCINNATI (September 5, 2025) – On Friday, September 5 providers and team members of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) celebrated several milestones and cases of cardiogenic shock patients at The Christ Hospital Health Network. The CVICU has a survival rate 10% higher than the international registry providing better outcomes for cardiogenic shock treated with ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation).
The CVICU at The Christ Hospital Health Network has achieved the following:
•900 Impella pumps implanted that help assist blood flow through the left side of the heart as temporary bridge to permanent solutions or recovery.
•ECMO Program providing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for more than 360 adults suffering from cardiopulmonary arrest and life-threatening heart or lung failure.
•400 patients undergoing Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD) implantations - a durable heart pump placed inside the chest to assist the left side of the heart as treatment for advanced heart failure.
•51 Patients receiving heart transplants
The event was hosted in the CVICU of the heart tower at the Mt. Auburn campus and included testimony from a patient who spent a month in the unit on temporary heart pumps following sudden acute heart failure and is now back to working out and scuba diving.
“Our talented team of doctors, nurses and advanced care providers continue to create exceptional outcomes for some of our sickest cardiovascular patients,” said Miriam Freundt, MD, FACC, FACP, Director of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and Director of the ECMO Program. “As Cincinnati’s heart hospital, this community knows they do not need to travel for impeccable heart care. As our LVAD, ECMO and transplant programs continue to grow, we continue to be the destination for care not just in the region but in the country.”
