Project Heart ReStart Gives 50 AEDs to More Than Two Dozen Police Departments

More than 20 Police Chiefs Received AEDs at Event

CINCINNATI (April 26, 2024) – As part of Project Heart ReStart’s goal to equip every law enforcement agency in Hamilton County with an Automated External Defibrillators (AED), the committee delivered 50 AEDs to 26 different communities on Wednesday, April 24 in Cincinnati.

In November 2023, Project Heart ReStart, led by The Christ Hospital Health Network, Rotary Club of Cincinnati, CINTAS and Hamilton County Commissioners announced that every Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office cruiser was equipped with a live-saving AED. In Phase I, the committee raised more than $250,000 to purchase 130 AEDs for the HCSO.

The Phase II goal remains to raise enough money to purchase these vital pieces of equipment and meet 100% of the need for each community in Hamilton County. The Hamilton County Police Association has identified those departments with an immediate need for AEDs in their patrol vehicles.

From May 2022 through May of 2023, there were over 1,200 cardiac event calls to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s patrolled areas, and more than two thirds of those patrol cars did not have an AED in their cruiser. Every minute of delay in the use of an AED reduces the survival rate by 7-10%. Having an AED for our first responders on the scene of a cardiac event increases the survival rate from 10% to 40%.
